decorative green doorCanfei Nesharim’s message is really very simple: protecting the environment is our Jewish responsibility.  Over the last ten years, your generous support has turned this simple idea into a Torah-based environmental movement.

The partnership of our friends and supporters has made our work possible from the beginning.  Thank you so much for your ongoing support!

Happy Chanukah! We hope that your Chanukah is full of light and joyous, meaningful family moments.

In our days, Chanukah is precisely the time of year when we most encounter our relationship with possessions. At this time of giving and receiving gifts, we have the opportunity to reevaluate our relationship to our possessions and “things” in general, and look for less wasteful ways to use the Earth’s resources. Kindling the Chanukah flames can shed new light on how we use energy, as olive oil, the most me’hudar (special) form of lighting, is a bio-fuel: a renewable resource. The olive tree will produce another crop of olives next year. Lighting the Chanukah menorah can and should help us connect to the holy use of our resources.

Thank you to everyone who supported our curriculum development project!  We have partnered with several schools who are providing valuable feedback and support.  None of this could happen without you!  Please include us as you plan your end-of year gifting.  Gift future generations a cleaner and more sustainable earth – help Canfei Nesharim hit our $5,000 year-end goal so that we can continue to develop our curriculum materials and update our website to provide a more robust platform to support our schools and communities.

On the eve of the New Year, we want to share with you a quote from Victor Lebow who once commented on consumer society saying, “Our enormously productive economy…demands that we make consumption our way of life, that we convert the buying and use of goods into rituals, that we seek our spiritual satisfaction, our ego satisfaction, in consumption…We need things consumed, burned up, worn out, replaced, and discarded at an ever increasing rate.” There is much work yet to be done to bring this consciousness to the Orthodox Jewish Community. Here at Canfei Nesharim we are committed to this work.

With the light of Chanukah illuminating our vision, we hope that you continue to value our work of bringing environmental consciousness to the Orthodox Jewish Community. In that spirit, we ask that as the year comes to a close you consider making a donation to help us continue our important work.  We need your help!

May our Chanukah lights inspire us toward responsible and holy use of all our resources and possessions.
