Who We Are / About Us

Organizational Purpose

Our mission is to inspire the Orthodox Jewish community to understand and act on the relationship between traditional Jewish sources and modern environmental issues.  As the leader of a Torah-based environmental movement, Canfei Nesharim develops programs and materials to provide rabbis, day schools, synagogues and outreach organizations with access to Torah-based environmental resources, and promotes and ongoing dialogue about our Torah responsibility to protect the environment.

Canfei Nesharim was launched with a series of events and publications on Tu b'Shevat 5763, as part of a broad movement to educate Orthodox Jews about the blessings of the natural world, and our obligations to protect it. We are also in the process of developing educational materials and publications which will help you learn more about Jewish perspectives on the environment and how to protect it. We encourage you to forward our messages to everyone who would find our materials of interest.

What We're Focusing on Now:
Canfei Nesharim is providing support to our lay leaders to engage their whole communities, shifting the mindset of the community members and creating actions and awareness that appeal to the entire congregation. We plan to create Torah-based resources for day schools, bringing these teachings into the lessons of our young people and having them bring the work home. We can bring a new Torah voice to the environmental community and provide concepts from the Torah and Talmud that can breathe new light and life into the environmental movement. We can unite the Jewish community on an issue that is important to us all.  Click here to read our Activity Plan for 2008.

Canfei Nesharim sees itself as providing a unique contribution to the Jewish community and the environmental movement.  For more information about the contribution of the religious community to the environment, read "We Need to Change More than a Lightbulb" - a column written by Evonne Marzouk and recently posted in the religion blog of the Washington Post and Newsweek.

Thank You!

Canfei Nesharim expresses its sincere gratitude to Bikkurim, a joint project of JESNA, UJC, and the Kaminer Family, for taking us into their incubator for new Jewish ideas beginning in the Spring of 2004.

We’re grateful to Hazon (www.hazon.org) and the riders and sponsors of the New York Jewish Environmental Bike Ride for providing a grant to support the launch of Canfei Nesharim.
